The Song of the Lonely Swan

The moon looked into the water, serenely smiling.
She was the reigning night queen, tender and beguiling.
As her face wandered over the silvery lake with a dreamy yawn,
her gaze caught sight of a lonely black swan.

His wings gracefully spread, his feathers as black as the night,
gliding like a dark prince, so elegant, he filled her with delight.
His neck curved, his bearing full of beauty and with pride,
she was unable to take her eyes off him as he noiselessly took his ride.

‘Oh!’ she exclaimed in wonder. ‘How can this be?
You’re roaming the waves without even looking at me?’
The swan raised his head and gave off a very long sigh.
‘My lady,’ he said, ‘forgive me! In your presence, I always feel so shy.’

The moon fell silent, her pale face all kindness as she looked down.
‘You lovely creature,’ she softly said,
‘don’t you know how kingly you look in your pretty gown?’
‘Your words console my desolate heart, oh beautiful queen!’
he replied. ‘But I’m forever humbled ever since your face I have first seen.’

The moon exclaimed
‘Oh beautiful swan! ’Tis not wisdom that you speak.
Search inside you and tell me what you really seek!’
‘I seek your love, oh fair lady of the endless sky,
and restless I shall roam the waters until the day I die.’

‘I rule above the world of night and cannot share
this love you claim – is naught but an impossible affair.’
Her silver threads stretched out to him like a lover’s tender touch.
The lady’s light that reached inside his heart told him she cared so much.

The swan bowed low and from his throat a wonderful tune
began to sound in reverence for the lady of the moon.
Then her whispers echoed like a sad song from the skies above:
‘Truly, the moon’s watch has ever been a solitary chore …
yet much lonelier still is the yearning heart of the beautiful swan in love!’
